The county is named for Button Gwinnett, who once served as the provisional president of Georgia during 1777. Gwinnett played a key role during the Revolutionary War as one of the three Georgia signatories of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. He was also the author of the original draft of Georgia’s first State Constitution.
